This course introduces learners to the fundamentals of Advanced Drug Delivery Systems (ADDS), the engineered carriers and technologies that have transformed how therapeutic drugs are administered and act within the body. Moving beyond conventional dosage forms like tablets and injections, students will explore how nanotechnology, polymer science, and biomaterials are used to control where, when, and how fast a drug is released. The course begins by comparing conventional and advanced delivery systems, examining key pharmacokinetic concepts such as bioavailability and the plasma concentration to time profile, including the therapeutic window, peak trough fluctuations, and sustained-release plateaus. Learners will then study eight major carrier platforms in depth—liposomes, polymeric nanoparticles, niosomes, micelles, dendrimers, microspheres, transdermal patches, and implants with a focus on their structure, composition, and step by step mechanism of drug release. Finally, the course connects theory to practice by reviewing real world, clinically approved products used for disease treatment, along with nanocarrier applications in diagnostic imaging (e.g., MRI contrast agents, gold nanoparticles).
